City of Lake Charles


Lake Charles is the fifth-largest incorporated city in the state of Louisiana. It is located on Lake Charles, Prien Lake and the Calcasieu River. This city was founded in 1861 and has grown into a major industrial, educational and cultural centre in the state. As of the 2020 census, it has a population of 84,872 and is considered a significant centre of petrochemical refining, tourism, gambling and education. It hosts the McNeese State University and the Sowela Technical Community College.

Lake Charles consists of a predominantly Christian population and the Roman Catholicism is the largest individual denomination as it claims 50% of the population. There is also a protestant denomination with the largest being the Southern Baptist church which takes up 30% of the population. other denominations in the city are Islam, Eastern Orthodox Christianity, and The Church of Jesus of Latter-day Saints.

As stated above, there are petrochemical plants and oil refineries located in the city. some notable mentions include Citgo, Turner Industries and Westlake Chemical Corporation just to mention a few.

It also is a commercial and retail centre with small businesses to huge malls serving the entire population. You will get casinos where you can play your favourite games with notable casinos being the L'Auberge du Lac Casino Resort and the Golden Nugget Lake Charles.

Lake Charles is rich in culture, arts and theatre. It has a strong Cajun and Creole culture as it is in southwest Louisiana. You will get a symphony orchestra and the lake Charles little theatre. There are also several museums and art galleries to fancy your liking.
